Top 5 review – find the best front attaching dog harness

Puppy front attaching harness

Front attaching dog harnesses are ideal to manage dogs that pull when on the leash. I personally use a front attaching harness on my puppy and it works wonderfully well to reduce my puppy’s pulling. In this review I’ll list top 5 front attaching harnesses to help you find the best front attaching dog harness for your dog.

Disclaimer: This review has been conducted by researching available product reviews and not by personal testing. If you’re unsure of the best harness for your dog, it is advisable to physically trial several harnesses for your dog.

Introduction to front attaching dog harnesses

I prefer using a harness over a collar, however, different dogs can have different needs when it comes to choosing your walking equipment. To get an overview of benefits of using a harness vs a collar, you can read my article about this topic here.

Unlike in conventional harnesses, in front attaching harnesses the leash is attached to the front of the harness. The idea is that when the dog pulls, this will cause the front end of the dog to turn back towards the walker and stop the pulling action.

Using a front attaching harness is a gentler way to teach a dog not to pull compared to other methods, such as choke chains or head halters. Some claim the negative aspects of using a front attaching harness is that the dog doesn’t actually learn to walk on a loose lead, but simply does this, because it has to. However, front attaching harnesses provide a great amount of security and control for owners of dogs that pull and ultimately make teaching loose lead walking more enjoyable for the owner.

What to consider when purchasing a front attaching dog harness

There is a range of front attaching dog harness brands available, but it is important to choose the right fit for your dog as a poorly fitted harness may cause discomfort or chronic pain for your dog. A good front attaching harness should have at least these features:

  1. Reduces pulling by applying tension on the dog’s front
  2. Multiple adjustment points for perfect fit
  3. Made from soft and durable material

A common problem which I also have encountered is sideways slipping of the harness or sagging of the front strap when the harness is pulled. These can be minimized by using a well-fitting harness (i.e. contains multiple adjustment points) and avoiding using a harness that contains a single horizontal front strap. It is also important to choose a material that doesn’t stretch or wear too quickly.

It is important to measure your dog to find out the correct size. Dog harnesses generally come in 5 sizes: extra small (S), small (S), medium (M), large (L) and extra large (XL). Some brands have extra sizing such as XXS or 2XL, which provide a better range for very small or very large dogs.

Most often the sizing of dog harnesses is determined by the width of the dog’s chest (also known as girth) and some harness brands also recommend measuring the width of the base of the neck. As it stands, these measurements are more important than the weight of the dog.

Below I’ve listed the top 5 front attaching dog harnesses. All the listed harnesses have a good design to minimize sideways slipping, are made from durable material and come at a good price.
